Grusonia pulchella (Engelm.) H.Rob., also known as sagebrush cholla, is a tuberous species of opuntioid cactus from the Mojave Desert of central Nevada, eastern California, northwestern Arizona and western Utah in the United States. Grusonia pulchella has at various times been included in Opuntia or placed in a separate genus Micropuntia. The cactus is a plant that flowers, and the blooms generate fruit that bears seeds; it is the seeds that end up leading to new cactus plants. Bats provide the pollination for some species of cactus, and the flowers bloom in the spring each year. This and the closely related Opuntia santa-rita (which some think is just a variety of Opuntia gosseliniana) are among the bluest of all the cacti. This is a fast-growing species, relative to most of the other blue ones mentioned so far; and a really bad plant to brush up against (itty bitty spines get in your skin and are hard to find.) Besides a very good presentation of the 60 species, varieties, forms or cultivars of Opuntia, commonly found in the United States and northern Mexico, the book have a very interesting presentation about the way to approach of Opuntia plants. Behavior, Under Cultural Conditions, Mexico's Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts sport a variety of climates as well as a plethora of cacti. These regions have a number of landscape features that are responsible for the differences in characteristics of the various cacti, including their shape, height and ability to produce flowers. Opuntia, the prickly pear, or Indian fig cactus, is a large typical group, comprising some 150 species, found in North America, the West Indies, and warmer parts of South America, extending as far as Chile. In aspect they are very distinct from any of the other groups. Behavior, Under Cultural Conditions, of Species of Cacti Known as Opuntia. (Classic Reprint) (Paperback). Filesize: 3.23 MB. Reviews. Among Cactaceae, Opuntia is the most diverse and widely distributed genus in the Americas. Hi All. I was hoping to get some recommendations on a few Opuntia species specifically for the size, quality and taste of the fruit. Does anyone have any suggestions on a couple of species that produce a fair amount of large red fruit (tuna)? I am currently growing OPUNTIA FICUS INDICA for pads and also Opuntia engelmannii var. Linguiformis The dominant genus of cacti was the Opuntia, which are far the easiest genera to grow in the southeast. Opuntia are found in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. The opuntia with the largest pad is naturally Opuntia texensis, the state where everything is "larger". If you want to dazzle your neighbors, then this is your plant. Do opuntia (prickly pear) cacti readily form hybrids in the wild? Ask Question Asked 8 years, The better cacti books that I can find typically only list the dozen or so of most common/notorious species and finding matches has been difficult. Opuntia hybridizes readily between species. This can make classification difficult. Opuntia ficus-indica (prickly pear) is a species of cactus that has long been a domesticated In Mexican Spanish, the plant is called nopal, while the fruit is called tuna, The name "tuna" is also used for the fruit of this cactus, and for Opuntia in They have developed a number of adaptations to dry conditions, notably Once called Opuntia vulgaris, Indian fig prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) is grown far outside its native home of Mexico because of its edible fruits and pads. Cacti have stems, pads, or branches that form as ribs or knobs. These swell and contract, accordion style, as water is stored or lost. A cactus's thick fleshy outer "skin" is glazed with a waxy layer that efficiently protects the plant against both moisture loss and the sun's radiant heat. While most cacti are inedible, the Opuntia species has much to offer, especially if treated like a crop rather than a weed run wild.
